Children's Book Sale, Houston Public Library Recovery Fundraiser and Readathon!

We alongside our incredible community partners will be moving forward with our Children’s Book Sale & Readathon in an effort to support library recovery efforts and bring some literacy and light into our community! Proceeds from the book sales, and any donations made at the sale will go toward Houston Public Library Recovery Efforts.

We have been humbled by the generosity of our fellow Houstonians during this difficult time for the City, and we are here to support our neighbors by getting our Houston Public Libraries back up and running so they can get vital resources and programming back into the community.

IMPORTANT MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

Hurricane Harvey recovery has impacted our community.  Friends of HPL are extending the special Friends Membership pricing to everyone shopping at this Saturday's book sale. No other membership discounts are applicable for this sale.

All individual books and AVs are selling for $2 or less, tax included for all shoppers.

We encourage our supporters to make a tax-deductible donation to Library Recovery efforts that will be used to replace damaged books and other essential items.

Join UHD's Department of Urban Education in celebration of International Literacy Day for a read-aloud experience without borders! Students, teachers and community members will read aloud to children and adults the entire book sale!

UHD-Did You Know: Reading aloud to children helps develop language proficiency, increase vocabulary, understand story structure, and encourage a love for reading.  Children begin to comprehend the world around them as they listen to authentic stories and engage in texts that connect to their own experiences.

Friends of HPL Mini-Book Sale at HPL's Books Alive!

Join The Houston Public Library for some high-flying fun as we gear up to celebrate this year’s Books Alive! featured author, Grace Lin at our annual Books Alive! Celebration on Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at the Central Library located at 500 McKinney for children of all ages.

The Children’s Book Celebration kicks off with a full day of exciting performances, hands-on arts and crafts activities, and special appearances. The highlight of the celebration is the appearance of Grace Lin, author and illustrator of several books including her newest book, When the Sea Turned to Silver. She is also well known for her young children’s books Dim Sum for Everyone!, Ling and Ting adventures and The Ugly Vegetables. The event is free and open to the public.

Get ready to “Game On!” through the 2017 Summer Reading Program! Earn books and win prizes!

The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is a free incentive-based program to encourage kids and teens to read and explore various programs. The SRP includes many diverse, free, educational and fun programs for kids and teens up to 18 years of age.

The program runs from June 1 – July 31. You can register at any Houston Public Library location or from your home computer. To participate, read or listen to books, enter book titles or time read on your online reading log either at home or with the help of your librarian, and come to your local Houston Public Library location to pick up your prizes. The top 2 readers at each location will earn an NES Classic Game Console! Additionally, we are offering even more opportunities to win in 2017! For each program attended, you will earn a badge. Attend 5 different programs over the course of the program, and win a bonus prize. Plus, just for registering for the SRP, kids will receive a free book for their home libraries! Parents and caregivers can read this summer, too. If both a child and their parent or caregiver complete the SRP, they will win a family prize pack! All books will be $10, tax included.

Included will be compiled family histories and more!  These books cover many historical sources including cemetery indexes, county histories, indexes to land records, etc. 

All materials that are used in the pursuit of family history!  These books are duplicates of books found in the main library genealogy collection.  Checks and cash will be accepted.  No Reservations required.
