Membership is an important part of how the Friends supports the Library. Beyond being a significant part of our financial support for the Library, a strong membership gives us a strong voice when we speak up on matters that affect Houston’s Library. Together we will be able to ensure that this major educational and cultural institution can continue to offer the very best service to our community.
A Big Perk, Members’ Preview Sale
Perhaps the biggest benefit we can give to our members is an early shot at the Annual Book Sale. The Friday night of the sale is always the Members’ Preview Sale where we welcome members only to shop and buy as many books as you can. Members at the Patron level and above will receive additional passes for friends, family and colleagues.
Each individual member receives a singles pass. Children and teens age 17 and under are admitted free.
Important Membership Details
Adult individual memberships are $20.
Membership for Friends age 17 and under is free.
The membership year is from January through December, and memberships expire on December 31.
The Friends of the Houston Public Library is a 501c3 tax-exempt organization. Under IRS guidelines, the estimated value of benefits received is not substantial; therefore, the full amount of your payment is a deductible contribution.
Joining & Renewing
You will renew your membership in January for the upcoming year. If you join as a new member in the last four months of the year (September through December), your membership will be for the upcoming year. When you join at the Annual Book Sale in March, your membership will be for the rest of the year, and you will simply renew in January in time to get your pass to the next big Book Sale.
Families & Individuals
An Adult Membership, that is for anyone 18 and older, will be $20. Since our long-time Family Membership was $40, this doesn’t represent a change at all for many of our members. What this will do is make managing the passes before the Annual Book Sale much easier. No matter how many adults are in your family, it will be easy to calculate the price of membership and get everyone to the sale that first night.
Seniors & Children
Because there will no longer be a distinction between Family and Individual passes at the sale, anyone under the age of 18 will be admitted on member night free. We hope that this will clarify what makes a Family Membership and make it simpler to bring children (of all ages) to the sale! We are also eliminating the Senior category of membership, and the same $20 per individual will apply for persons over a certain age as well.
