WE CAN TAKE TEXTBOOKS NOW!
The Friends is now actively seeking donations of used textbooks, K-12 and college level, especially those with a recent copyright date.
We discouraged textbook donations in the past because we have had no success in selling them at our annual sale. That is still true.
However, last year the Friends signed a partnership agreement with Better World Books, a company that sells donated books to support literacy efforts around the world. Better World Books has a huge market for used textbooks and we are eager to try our luck in selling through them.
When the Friends consign books to Better World Books, we receive a commission on each sale. Last year the Friends sent the leftovers from the Annual Bargain Book Sale – the books that we couldn’t sell – to Better World Books. To date they have sold over 7,000 of our leftovers, and the Friends has earned over $2,000 to add to our book sale proceeds. Now we want to add textbooks to our consignments.
Textbook drives could be a great project for scout troops or school groups, especially those in private schools. In these schools, the students themselves (meaning the parents) are responsible for providing their own textbooks. When a semester ends it is time consuming to sell them. A teacher may change textbooks or a new edition is published, making sales even more difficult.
Now there is the option of donation to the Friends, knowing that if the book is sold the Houston Public Library will benefit from the proceeds. Used textbooks can be delivered to our warehouse at 6510 West Little York. The Friends will always provide a receipt for tax purposes.
